Lightspeed POS: When Your Inventory Outgrows the Basics

We recommend Lightspeed to Dallas retailers who’ve hit the wall with simpler systems. If you’re managing hundreds of size/color combos, juggling multiple locations, or need your online store to actually sync with what’s on your shelves—this is where Lightspeed earns its higher price tag.

✓ Inventory depth that handles size/color matrices

✓ Real eCommerce sync (not a bolted-on afterthought)

✓ Multi-store management without switching systems

✓ iPad-based—take it anywhere in the store

Lightspeed POS System

Where Lightspeed Actually Makes Sense

Lightspeed costs more than Square. That’s not a knock—it’s the tradeoff for capabilities that simpler systems don’t have.

Inventory That Doesn’t Break

Selling a shirt in 5 sizes and 8 colors? That’s 40 variants per style. Most POS systems choke on this. Lightspeed handles it without drama—plus reorder alerts, purchase orders, and vendor management built in.

Online and In-Store Stay in Sync

Sell something in your shop and your website updates immediately. No more overselling, no manual syncing, no “sorry we actually don’t have that” emails to customers.

Works on iPads

Counter, sales floor, stockroom—take it wherever. Line getting long? Grab another iPad and bust it. This flexibility is great, though it does mean you can’t use a traditional dedicated terminal if that’s what you prefer.

Second Location? No Problem

Opening a second location after you’ve dialed in your first store? Transfer inventory between stores, see combined reporting, manage both from one login. Built for growth from day one.

Supplier Connections

Their NuORDER integration lets you discover brands, place wholesale orders, and import product data directly. Useful if you’re constantly sourcing new inventory for your shop.

Actually Helpful Support

24/7 phone and chat on all plans. They’ll help migrate your data and train your team. Not all POS companies bother with real onboarding—Lightspeed does.

Lightspeed POS FAQ

Is there a free version of Lightspeed?

No. Lightspeed starts at $89/month—there’s no free tier. They offer a 14-day trial, but that’s it. If budget is tight, Square gives you a genuinely free starting point. Lightspeed is for retailers who’ve already proven their concept and need more horsepower.

Do I need an iPad?

Yes. Lightspeed Retail runs on iPads—no dedicated terminals like you’d see with SkyTab or Toast. You can use your own iPad or buy hardware bundles from them (stands, scanners, receipt printers). Budget $329-$399 for a payment terminal on top of that. It’s flexible but does mean more pieces to manage.

Can I bring my own payment processor?

Sometimes. Lightspeed does allow third-party processors in some regions, but they push you toward Lightspeed Payments (2.6% + 10¢). Using your own processor may cost more on the software side. If processor flexibility is critical, ask about this before signing.

How does Lightspeed compare to Square for retail?

Square is simpler, cheaper, and free to start. Lightspeed is more powerful for inventory-heavy operations. If you’re selling t-shirts in 5 sizes and 8 colors across multiple locations with an online store, Lightspeed handles that complexity better. If you’re a small boutique with straightforward inventory, Square will probably do the job for less money.

What about contracts?

Monthly plans exist but cost more. Annual billing saves up to 18% but locks you in for a year. Some promotional deals require longer commitments. Read the fine print—we’ve seen retailers get surprised by auto-renewals.
